PRACTICE
Our process is a refinement of the goals of providing liveable, functional and sustainable spaces for people.
Our practice has been set up to facilitate those goals and to provide a rich and meaningful experience for those we collaborate with.
Smaller but better
After working for over ten years for award-winning firms in Newcastle, regional NSW and Sydney, Eddie Page started Maxwell & Page to provide a more focused and bespoke architecture experience.
We're not volume-based; we're value-driven, crafting spaces that resonate. Choose us for thoughtfully curated residential sanctuaries, inspiring commercial realms, and community-enhancing public spaces.
Our approach is simple yet profound – to encourage 'smaller but better.' We understand that greatness lies in thoughtful design, not sheer scale. Whether it's envisioning your dream home or breathing life into commercial ventures, we excel in architectural design, concept development, and more.
Our team
Good architecture requires collaboration, and all of our projects have the benefit of a small team who share a passion of enriching people’s lives through thoughtful design and a responsibility that we leave each site we work on in a better state then when we found it.
Our Process
Most clients come to us with a goal in mind, our role is to help you get there. To help clarify the path your project will take, the process for most projects can be summarised under the following phases that increase in involvement and resolution as your project heads towards completion.
STEP ONE
Feasibility Study
Building and renovating is one of the biggest financial investments one will make in their lifetime. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start so this service provides an opportunity to discuss the potential costs and constraints you might come up against.
There are those that would prefer to run full speed into a project, think of this as simply dipping your toe in!
Step Two
Concept Design
Every project is different, because every person is different. There might be a dozen different ways to solve your brief on the site you have to work with, our job is to help you choose the one that best suits you.
In this phase we rigorously study your brief and provide a couple of options for you to consider. Conscious not to over invest early, we generally prefer to do this using quick hand drawn plans and sketches.
Step Three
Schematic Design
Having chosen a preferred direction from the concept options, we transfer this into computer software to provide a more definitive indication of sizes and volumes of spaces. We use different drawings, and maybe even a physical model to help you get an idea of how your spaces are going to behave and feel.
Step Four
Developed Design / Town Planning
Once in a blue moon, you might get lucky and not require authority approval to satisfy your brief. Generally speaking, there’ll almost certainly be a few hoops to jump through depending on the scope and scale of your project.
We don’t want you to have to stress about this stuff. Architects are highly-trained and experienced building and design professionals and we quite enjoy swashbuckling councils and planning departments to help you gain the necessary approvals.
This requires an additional amount of detail, so along the way we work through your model to identify preferred fixtures and finishes and provide an idea of how your project relates with the local natural and built context.
Step Five
Detailed Design
If feasibility is dipping your toe in, by this stage you’ve well and truly swimming baby!
This phase is the most involved part of the project and involves documenting your project to a level of detail necessary such that a builder can price it and build it. We study your project in intricate detail over three dimensions to satisfy ourselves that in can be built, and we consistently check in with you to ensure what is proposed is what you have asked for.
No one likes unfortunate surprises during construction, so this phase is designed to reduce the unknowns as you approach construction. This involves more than drawings, requiring extensive schedules and specifications so those hoping to build the project know exactly what is expected of them.
step six
Tender / Contract Administration
Construction is a daunting process. So again, we try to take some of the stress away by helping you select and engage the ideal builder for your project.
We can then manage the build of your project to ensure it is being built to specification with quality and longevity in mind.
We are there to help communicate with your builder, encouraging them to keep on time and on budget, all the while solving the myriad little conundrums that invariably pop up in every building project.
Other
While the above is the traditional procedure for getting your project from your head to built reality, it might be that your project requires a different service or approach.
Being building and design experts we are well placed to help solve whatever puzzle you have before you. We handle these types of tasks on a day-to-day basis so are prepared to calmly and efficiently deal with curve-balls, saving you the stress and learning-curve.
